The first mobile telephone service started on early as 1946 in st. Louse, Missouri, USA. This was manually operated service with restricted area of service for only few lucky subscribers. The cost of mobile terminates was also very high. Between 1950 and 1970 mobile telephones evolved to be automatic with decreased cost due to introduction of semiconductor technology
Let us consider a city where one lakh mobile subscriber needs to be served. Considering a single RF loop requires a frequency of 50K.Hz. So a total of 100,000*50K.Hz of band width would be needed to serve there subscribers of an individual dedicated RF loop is needed for every subscriber. Obviously such a huge bandwidth is not available that too for a limited number of subscriber in a single city. In order to overcome this problem cellular principle is adopted
MULTIPLE ACCESS METHOD
Multiple access mean that a large number of subscribers would be accessing a switching facility through a limited resource of allocated frequency spectrum .These frequency resources for different type of mobile system can be utilized for the stated purpose by dividing it either in frequency domain, or time domain, or the entire frequency band be shared simultaneously by users discriminated in code domain. These multiple access methods are known as frequency division multiple accesses FDM, TDMA and CDMA.
The first generation systems were analog. The second generation is digital. When it was time for digital, three or four competitors emerged and a struggle for survival began. It none appears that the system will survive.
Different countries, depending upon their requirement, geographical conditions, subscribers density and frequency availability have adopted different standards for cellular mobile services. After weighing pros and cons of various technologies available. It was decided to introduce Global System For Mobile Communication (GSM) operating in 900 MHZ band in India in 1991.
